TRICKED OUT TREATS
OUTSIDE = FRIGHTFUL,
INSIDE = DELIGHTFUL
We hope everyone managed the week of winds and power outages as best they could. Apropos that the weather would turn scary in time for all things spooky to emerge from the woods. We have some shocking thrills in store for you at the Corner this week. We are tricking out all of our treats to the nines. As you load up on sweet goodies, it is also time to give a thought to your holiday meal entrees. Read on for gripping tales of ghoulishly good groceries!
PROTEIN PRE-ORDER
Protein Pre-Order for your holiday meal have gone LIVE! Here at Chimacum Corner Farmstand we're all about supporting local, which is why we're excited to share Thanksgiving plans that include some non-traditional options coming from local ranchers (and fishers!)
Along with a smaller selection of Mary's certified organic turkeys from California, we are excited to highlight Bright Ide Acres local pasture-raised turkeys. These lovely birds are fully pasture-raised, fed Washington-grown non-GMO corn and soy-free grains, and are processed at a family farm in Orting, halfway between Tacoma and Mount Rainier.
And if you're of the adventurous type, we're excited to offer chuck roasts from One Straw Ranch in Chimacum. These tender roasts cook up great in a slow cooker or as a braise in the oven, and will definitely wow the Thanksgiving crowds. Plus, they make a great gravy for local Midori potatoes :) Check out some recipe ideas on our webpage here.
And lastly, we have the fresh catch from this year's salmon season! Katfish Salmon has brought us an abundance of sockeye sides, hook-and-line caught in Southeast Alaska and fully traceable from fish to table. These make an absolutely stunning centerpiece, roasted in the oven with some lemon slices and parsley scattered on the top. And, with less than half an hour of oven time required, you won't have to juggle the pies, potatoes, veggie roasts, bread, and everything else to make room!
We're excited to take you along on this journey into celebrating the local food that sustains our minds, our bodies, and our incredible community. We couldn't have done this without support from all of you choosing to shop here for 14 years now. And we wouldn't have even had the vision to embark on this journey without some incredible farmers, ranchers, and food artisans trying to change the world one bite at a time. Thank you all!
TO HACHIYA PERCHANCE TO FUYU
Now is the time to load up on all the briefly available fall treats on the porch, particularly pomegranates and persimmons. We have both the Hachiya type and the Fuyu type persimmons. Hachiyas are taller and shaped like the nose of a rocket, and can only be eaten when they are soft, and thus are purchased and left to ripen on the counter (unless you are lucky and find a ripe one at the store!) Fuyus are squat and shaped somewhat like a four leaf clover, and can be eaten in a semi-soft state, but can also be left to get fully jellied like the Hachiya. The piece de la resistance of your fall menu would be a Pomegranate Persimmon Salad with warm goat cheese from Mystery Bay Farm. Did you know the pomegranate “seed” is actually called an “aril”?
CASE DEALS
New to case offerings: Could there possibly be more apple varietals to add? The Tonnemaker encyclopedia of apples has some new entries on the porch this week, including Jonagolds, Braeburns, and Crimson Delights. Also, Tonnemaker has added Boscs to the pear rotation! Boscs available in 5# and 25# cases like the Sunrise Euros. Come on in for full availability on cases of apples, pears, and winter squash.
SCREAMING DEALS (EEK!)
This week is the last chance on all the October deals you have been grooving on at the Corner! We have an epic suite of chocolates on deal this month to coincide with Halloween. Bars from Honey Mama’s, Alter Eco, and Hu are all on the deal sheet right now! Need something smaller? Cocomels sea salt caramel squares are only $1.39 each! Also time is running out to get your guess in for how much our giant pumpkin weighs!
SHELTER FROM THE STORM
We are proud to carry some limited edition birdhouses from The Tough Sprout, a young person’s collective woodworking operation from the Cape George area. Neighbors to Shooting Star Farm, these folks are turning out some quality domiciles for your local winged fauna. Supplies are running low, so stop into the greenhouse soon to get your set-up for all of your bird friends!
We are also continuing to put many plants on significant discount throughout the fall and into the winter. Our Nursery Manager Del is on hand most days to provide kindly assistance to all those with queries.
LAST CHIMACUM FARMERS MARKET
Come on out for the last Chimacum Farmers Market of the season y’all! October 27th from 10 to 2. Wear your costume and trick or treat with the vendors. There will also be a pumpkin painting craft zone for kids! Such sweet and tender fall vibes, and a good opportunity to support all the local small businesses that rely on you purchasing directly from them. The JCFM newsletter is a great way to stay up to date with what’s happening at the local farmers markets as well. And while our beloved Chimacum Farmers Market closes this Halloweekend, the Port Townsend Farmers Market runs all the way through mid-December!
