ROOTS ROCK
TURNIP THE BEET!
Roots are radical. At Chimacum Corner, we encourage you to know your roots. Did you know that carrots weren’t orange until Dutch farmers bred for the type in the 17th century, in a patriotic genetic display? Or that beets weren’t cultivated for their taproot and were more or less treated (and prized) as chard until German and Italian farmers did so in the 16th century? And that Aphrodite was said to eat beets to enhance her appeal? Or that black radishes were fed to the workers who built the pyramids by order of the pharaohs to increase their energy levels? Roots are fascinating, and are best studied through the lens of your own palette. Come on down to the Corner and root around for something nourishing and earthy. We’ve got loads of rootin’ tootin’ good stuff!
ROOT TO RISE
Fall is the time when roots are at their most flavorful. Red Dog Farm has been holding it down in the root department, as pole producer of our carrot crops, as well as purple and green daikon radishes, and the potently medicinal spanish black radish. Midori Farm are the master of bunched beets, with an assist from Chimalow Producein the loose red beet category. We also have white daikon radish from Chimalow as well. Now is the time for locally sourced Shepherd’s pies, beet soups, Buddha bowls, and shredded salads. At the Corner, we try to keep you grounded in local soils.
FRIED OUT
On Deals through Halloween, snag a bag of oven baked sweet potato fries from Strong Roots! One pound bags are two dollars off this month. An easy, loveable side to pair with local ground beef burgers or a hearty squash soup. Strong Roots is a certified B corporation and the fries are also gluten-free. We think these fries are totally tuber-ular!
KRAUTROCK
Did you know that Midori Farm was once two separate businesses? Marko had his own fermented foods business back in 2005 and Hanako was starting to grow plant starts and vegetable farm on her own. In 2008, they founded Midori and the rest was… a lot of bone-rattling work and hard decisions and scary leaps of faith. We are so grateful for the work that they continue to do to feed our community, and proud to stock their line of fermented vegetables at the Corner. Right now, we are stocking their Kimchi, the spicy Curtido, Beet Kraut, and the original Sauerkraut. Mountains of cabbage, beets, and carrots from their farm go into the making of their krauts. Be sure to pick up a jar on your next visit, along with the many fresh vegetables available on the produce porch (Lower Salmon River winter squash, anyone?)
COMMUNITY HAPPENINGS
FREE COMMUNITY MEAL AT CHIMACUM GRANGE
Now in it’s fifth installment, Glean-toGather and Grief Circus invite you to the Free Community Meal at the Chimacum Grange on Sunday October 27th from 4-6 pm. Tasty cuisine forged from local ingredients is provided, event is BYO plate/bowl/utensils. This is a very sweet event that arose from a growing awareness of food insecurity in our county and a desire to create new threads of lost community in our rural sphere. Many hard-working young people come together to co-create this event with limited funding. Come see what it’s all about at the Grange!
KUL KAH HAN NATIVE PLANT SALE AT HJ CARROLL PARK
This Saturday, October 19th, the Kul Kah Han Native Plant Garden is having an epic Native Plant Sale from their nursery stock at the Salmon Shelter at HJ Carroll Park from 11-2. Kul Kah Han are one of our many native plant vendors at the Corner Store, and the work they have done on their site at HJ is tremendous and a serious source of knowledge regarding native plants for our local community. The plants you buy at their sale support the continued growth and development of the garden and its educational outreach. Stop on by and pick up some starts!
