ROOTS ROCK

TURNIP THE BEET!

Roots are radical. At Chimacum Corner, we encourage you to know your roots. Did you know that carrots weren’t orange until Dutch farmers bred for the type in the 17th century, in a patriotic genetic display? Or that beets weren’t cultivated for their taproot and were more or less treated (and prized) as chard until German and Italian farmers did so in the 16th century? And that Aphrodite was said to eat beets to enhance her appeal? Or that black radishes were fed to the workers who built the pyramids by order of the pharaohs to increase their energy levels? Roots are fascinating, and are best studied through the lens of your own palette. Come on down to the Corner and root around for something nourishing and earthy. We’ve got loads of rootin’ tootin’ good stuff!

ROOT TO RISE

Fall is the time when roots are at their most flavorful. Red Dog Farm has been holding it down in the root department, as pole producer of our carrot crops, as well as purple and green daikon radishes, and the potently medicinal spanish black radish. Midori Farm are the master of bunched beets, with an assist from Chimalow Producein the loose red beet category. We also have white daikon radish from Chimalow as well. Now is the time for locally sourced Shepherd’s pies, beet soups, Buddha bowls, and shredded salads. At the Corner, we try to keep you grounded in local soils.

CASE DEALS

New to case offerings: The apple palette continues to expand, with cases of Fuji apples at $25, Pink Lady apples at $37.50, and the inimitable Evercrisp apples at $50. We also added the option to do 5# cases of Seckel pears, 5# cases of local Asian pears, and 5# cases of Sunrise European pears. All hail the year of the 5# pear case! Come on in for full availability on cases of apples, pears, and winter squash.

FRIED OUT

On Deals through Halloween, snag a bag of oven baked sweet potato fries from Strong Roots! One pound bags are two dollars off this month. An easy, loveable side to pair with local ground beef burgers or a hearty squash soup. Strong Roots is a certified B corporation and the fries are also gluten-free. We think these fries are totally tuber-ular!

HOPPIN’ JARS

We are fortunate to live in strong root production territory, and we have several excellent value added producers in our midst. Meghan Mix of Hopscotch Farm and Cannery has been farming and producing canned goods for close to ten years in her self-described “multi-plot micro-farm” system. Since her business’s inception Meghan has been “hopping” from plot to plot, growing nutrient dense produce that she both sells fresh and processes into top-quality canned goods. Currently on our shelves we have her Sweet Zucchini relish, her Beet Relish with Horseradish, and her Pickled Beets. Look for all that and more at her booth at the Port Townsend Farmer’s Market as well!

KRAUTROCK

Did you know that Midori Farm was once two separate businesses? Marko had his own fermented foods business back in 2005 and Hanako was starting to grow plant starts and vegetable farm on her own. In 2008, they founded Midori and the rest was… a lot of bone-rattling work and hard decisions and scary leaps of faith. We are so grateful for the work that they continue to do to feed our community, and proud to stock their line of fermented vegetables at the Corner. Right now, we are stocking their Kimchi, the spicy Curtido, Beet Kraut, and the original Sauerkraut. Mountains of cabbage, beets, and carrots from their farm go into the making of their krauts. Be sure to pick up a jar on your next visit, along with the many fresh vegetables available on the produce porch (Lower Salmon River winter squash, anyone?)

REVAMPED CARROT CAKE

Back fresh from the R&D lab at the Corner Kitchen, a new and improved Carrot Cake is sliced and ready to be snarfed in the Sweets Door of the Deli Case! Dense and moist, with delectable frosting, it is a treat that could land anywhere between brunch and dinner’s dessert! Did you know that Carrot Cake is said to be a descendant of a medieval carrot pudding? Neither did we!

COMMUNITY HAPPENINGS

Tasty cuisine forged from local ingredients is provided, event is BYO plate/bowl/utensils. This is a very sweet event that arose from a growing awareness of food insecurity in our county and a desire to create new threads of lost community in our rural sphere. Many hard-working young people come together to co-create this event with limited funding. Come see what it’s all about at the Grange!

KUL KAH HAN NATIVE PLANT SALE AT HJ CARROLL PARK
