AN APPLE A DAY
Hello Chimacum Corner Community!
This weekend marks the official beginning of fall, y’all! We feel it in the air and in the evenings. A big thank you to all in the community who went out and visited the local farms during Farm Tour Weekend. We know it meant a lot to all of our hyperlocal small producers. As we begin to re-gather inside and cozy up, there is still a mountain of work to be done in the fields. September’s full moon is the Harvest Moon, so-named because it was an extra eight hours of “daylight” to bring crops in. We know all of our local farmworkers are out there, rain or shine, filling macro totes of winter squash and potatoes and apples and much more. Come on down to the Corner to see all of their hard work on display!

APPLES FOR DAAAYYS
The scene on the porch is all about apples and pears! New additions to the fruit zone include Red Bartletts, Cortland Apples, Red Rubens Apples (produce manager and farmer favorite!), and Einset and Vanessa Grapes. All of these new crops are coming from Tonnemaker Hill Farm. In addition to those crops, we still have Gala, Sansa, Macintosh, Ruby Jonathan, and Zestar Apples, as well as Green Bartlett Pears- ALL from Tonnemaker Hill Farm!
WE’RE THE PLACE FOR BY THE CASE!
For apples, we pack standard 20lbs cases in the classic white Tonnemaker boxes. Right now, we have cases of Gala, Ruby Jonathan, Sweetie, and Zestar for $25, and cases of Sansa Sweet and McIntosh for $30. We also have case deals for Tonnemaker pears as well. We have 25lbs cases of Green and Red Bartletts for $26, but we also have 5lbs mini-cases of both Bartletts as well for a mere $6. And don’t miss out on the Asian Pears in 11lbs cases coming in at $25.
DIP WORTHY SEPTEMBER DEALS
Looking for the perfect classic dip for your fresh crop apples and pears? We happen to have the Once Again brand nut butter lineup on Deals for the month of September. Snag some Cashew Butter (Now $8.79), Sunflower Seed Butter (Now $5.79), or their creamy Tahini (Now $7.29). All for around half price their regular price! Get dippin’!
APPLE THINGS OF ALL KINDS
We would not be proud Washingtonians without an ample selection of value-added apple products. If you want to keep it truly local, look no further than Honey Apple Butter from Gray Fox Farm or Apple Sauce from SpringRain Farm and Orchard. For the little tykes in your life we have a high-quality apple puree squeeze-pack from Sauk Farm over in Skagit. And for those on the go, we have a great option in the Bellewood Farms Apple Chip bags. According to their label their chips are “made from the highest quality apples. Nothing added & no preservatives.” Just like you make them in your own dehydrator!
FILL AND BAKE AT HOME
Now that you’ve picked up your first apple case of the year, it’s time to get baking! Save yourself some time and use a pre-made crust made by our very own in the Corner Kitchen. We have regular and gluten-free options, the regular crusts are $5.99 and the gluten-free are $7.99 each. Those macintosh and cortland apples would love to be baked!
GET GROWING YOUR OWN
There’s an old saying that “the best time to plant a tree was 15 years ago; the second best time is today.” Plant your own future pie crop this fall with well-suited selections from our Corner Nursery. We’ve got nice specimens of evergreen huckleberries, grapes, raspberries, and blackberries just waiting to come home with you. Come on into the greenhouse and chat up one of our many erudite Nursery staff about what would work best for your garden.
No CCF newsletter about apples and pears would be complete without a shout-out to the upcoming Olympic Peninsula Apple & Cider Festival and Finnriver Apple Day! Happening from Thursday October 10 - Sunday October 13, check out all the details (and a great video from Tomoki Sage with a cameo from our very own Colin Fissenden). There may even be an apple tasting, featuring our favorite Farmer and WA Grown Apples on Sunday!
Eat up those apples and soak in that Fall Equinox!
