GARLIC-A-GO-GO

Hello Chimacum Corner Community!

There’s an old saying: “Garlic is as good as ten mothers”. The original phrase, of course, was that garlic is better than ten mothers for keeping the “girls” away. I much prefer the shorter, less specific form. For love, for care of your circle, garlic IS as good as ten mothers. Maybe better. Right now is the time to nurture your body and immune system with all the garlicky goods down at the Corner. Perhaps it’s also time to watch Les Blank’s 1980 celebratory documentary of the same name, to get all jazzed about the old “Stinking Rose.” And as we’ve crossed the threshold of the equinox, time to get out those dutch ovens and sauce pots and get them cranking!

ALLI-YUM

We have several delectable varieties of local garlic on the produce porch. Coming from Wildcat Valley Farm in Sequim we have the hardneck “Chesnok Red,” which is a Purple Stripe variety that shines when roasted. From our Kitsap sister, Winter Creek Farm, we have a nice white-papered softneck variety (which you can also purchase in a beautiful braid and hang in your kitchen, quelle romantique). We also have limited rotating quantities over the season from Chimalow Produce, Chimacum Workhorse Project, and others. Another astounding allium on the Porch is Midori Farm’s shallot crop, and we have scads of bulbs!

And don’t forget the CASE DEALS!

We’re rolling right through the thick of case season with so many options for the sauce pot or dehydrator!

DA SAUCE IS DA BOSS

If you are in a rush and need a quick bite, we have the Muir Glen line of organic pasta sauces on deal through the end of this month. Try the roasted garlic flavor, 23.5oz for only $2.99! (Add minced garlic to taste hehe) If you have more time you can use the sauce as a base and add fresh local veggies from the Produce Porch, like sweet Italian Roasting peppers from Spring Rain, Midori globe eggplant, and Chimalow zucchini.

DON’T MINCE OUT

When perusing the racks at the Corner store, it is obvious that our grocery buying team is one of true garlic aficionados. For a Grocery Manager fave, try the Toums (lebanese garlic spread) from Trazza Foods. No trip down allium-sauce lane would be complete without a bottle of the iconic Karam’s garlic sauce either. For the spice-heads, we’ve got two flavors of Mama Teav’s “hot garlic.” It is truly a sauce with a story. Rounding out our garlicky grocery highlights, we have a nice little jar of organic chopped garlic from Emperor’s Kitchen if you need it good-to-go. So many ways to celebrate the heavenly odors of garlic!

ZIG WITH THE LA-ZAG-NA

Nothing says mamma mia like a steaming tray of lasagna! Our Corner Kitchen Meals-To-Go program has prepared two for you. For the meat lovers we have the Sweet Italian Sausage version, featuring Egg & I Pork Sausage. For a Vegetarian option look to the roasted veggie version. Both are gluten-free! Copious amounts of garlic was harmed in the making of these lasagnas too. Stop on in after work and pick up a tray!

BULBASAUR I CHOOSE YOU

It is true for all food growers that there is always one foot planted in the present season and one stretching over to the next. As fall rushes in it is time to secure your seed crop of garlic for planting in October. We are fortunate to have several hyper-local seed garlic producers. At the moment there is Inchelium Red, German White, Orcas, and others coming from Solstice Farm, Saltwater Seeds, and Chimacum Workhorse Project. You might ask why seed garlic is so expensive. The answer is because you are getting the best bulbs from the grower that are sorted for size and performance, and are cured professionally. Seed garlic is also vetted for disease.

As we work hard to pull in fall harvest and plant for spring, no farmer’s wardrobe is complete without one of our restocked long sleeve nursery themed t-shirts! Available in  a smoky chocolatey brown and a muted green colorway. Perfect for getting your garlic in the ground!

HARVEST HAPPY HOUR

This week in our community section we would like to give a shout to the Harvest Happy Hour for Healthy Kids, a fundraiser evening for the Community Wellness Project. It will go down on Thursday, October 10th, from 5-7pm in the Haybarn at Finnriver. Several of the board members of JCCWP are also beloved producers in our community, and the funds raised will further the work that they are doing to connect children to the land through local food systems. They will even be serving student-made snacks using skills learned from their programming. We will drink to that!

Hope you get out and get garlicy this weekend!
