GREEN DAY
Hello Chimacum Corner Community!
There’s an old Irish expression: “You’ll never plow your field by turning it over in your mind.” Wise words for March, as the farmer’s to-do list metastasizes into a never-ending priority chain. Let us strive for action, then, this week. There is much ado in the kitchen and the garden this week. Those spuds don’t peel themselves, after all! Read on for all the ways CCF can help you get stuff done. A pot of brisket awaits you at the end of the flavor rainbow.
BRISKET AND RIP IT
In honor of the holiday, we wanted to share a special local recipe of one of our very own purveyors: Charlotte Frederickson of One Straw Ranch! She has a great recipe for Home Brined Corned Beef on the One Straw Farm Blog. It is even able to be done in an Instapot, for quick and efficient cooking! We have everything you need for this recipe at the Corner, including all the bulk spices to make your own brine! We thought of doing it all with local inputs makes us feel Irish-grade lucky. Check out more of One Straw’s recipes on their blog, and order directly from them on other cuts of meat and farm products as well! Now that is keeping it local, indeed.
“NOT MY CABBAGES!”
The plight of the humble cabbage merchant is a humorous aside throughout the animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender. Fortunately, the local kings of kraut, Midori Farm, have safeguarded their cabbage stores from untimely destruction. We always look forward to the great cabbage frenzy in the lead-up to St. Patrick’s Day. It is a benefit of living in our community that we have a local producer that can keep cabbage stocked around town well into the spring months. Don’t forget to pick up one of their ferments to go with your fresh cabbage!
In addition to local cabbage, we are also grateful to continue to stock local yellow potatoes from First Cut Farm via the Puget Sound Food Hub! Well-sized, sturdy yellow spuds have been coming from First Cut since Thanksgiving, and we have been really pleased with the consistent high quality potatoes they put out. Check out this article about First Cut on the Skagitonians website. An inspiring story about two WWOOFERs who came up through the ranks at Ralph’s Greenhouses.
SEASONAL PRODUCE SPECIALS
For our produce department deal for the second half of March, we have a great one-two punch: Lemons and Asparagus! Use them together alongside a filet of salmon with dill sauce, or use them on their own as you like. Lemons will be a dollar off per pound, and asparagus will be $3.99 per pound. These early spring specialties are fleeting, so enjoy them the next couple of weeks while you can.
PRODUCE IS HIRING!
Join a team that is passionate about produce and our local farming community. Our ideal produce clerk has produce-handling experience (farm or retail), efficient work habits, and great teamwork. Help us prep our award-winning produce porch with local organic fruits and veggies, and share our love of produce with the community! We are especially known for our work supporting local farms, but we also work with several small organic farms throughout Washington and with various large organic wholesale distribution suppliers.
SPROUTIN’ SPUDS
It is a northwest convention to have your potatoes planted by St. Patrick’s Day. Fortunately the CCF Nursery has gone all-in on providing seed potatoes from Irish Eyes seed farm in Ellensburg, WA. We will have local standards like Ozette Fingerling and German Butterball, as well as classics like Yukon Gold, Burbank Russet, Huckleberry Gold, and Red Nordland. Irish Eyes is not limited to seed potatoes, either; we also have their Asparagus Crowns and Onion Sets available for aspiring farmers as well! Check them all out in the greenhouse out front, and for deeper questions, ask a friendly, seasoned Nursery person!
BREKKIE B’S
The Corner Kitchen is loading the deli fridge with the hottest new commodity for your morning routine! Introducing the NEW Breakfast Burritos! Well-seasoned eggs, roasted potatoes, and crispy bacon, are topped with a house made pico de gallo and wrapped in ample-sized tortillas. A hearty and substantial start to anyone’s day. Get them early, or you might have to arm-wrestle a staff member for the last one!
UMAMI TOWN
While the days are getting longer and slightly less soggier, we still need hearty foods to keep us going, as we all know that winter can stick around on the Puget Sound. We have DEALS all month long on BonaFide Provisions broths and Miso Master miso products, to that end. Augment the umami in your soups, stews and broths with these fantastic products at lower price points. The BonaFide Provisions back story is a neat one as well. Bone broth is at the core of the company’s mission. Feed your healthy gut and your tastebuds all at once!
MIDORI GLASS JAR RETURNS
We mentioned Midori Farm’s ferments earlier on in the issue. With the hold placed on glass recycling and the price of glass vessels being what it is, as well as Midori’s departure from the Farmer’s Market, there is a need for their kraut fans to have a way to get their glass jars back to the farmer. CCF is happy to be a node in the web of Midori ferments, and we are able to collect Midori kraut jars to return to the farm in tandem with their weekly deliveries. Bring your clean washed jars back to the store to support local kraut production at Midori Farm!
