BERRIES IN YOUR BASKET
Hello Chimacum Corner Community!
This week we are manifesting that most pleasurable of seasons: the berry one! Local berries are still a glimmer on the horizon, but the Corner is chock full of berry flavored items to get your taste buds a-simmerin’. Whether in scones, ciders, kombuchas, or potted plants, there is berry much to get excited about in the store. Follow along to get your fructose on. Berries are our jam!
BURY SOME BERRIES
The nursery is chock full of interesting and off-beat berry varieties to lend healthy snacks to your garden zones. There are the time-honored champions of the blueberry patch, like “Toro” and “Reka.” There are the perennial Raspberry favorites, like “Coho” and “Meeker.” There are also seaberries, pink currants, and even a solid crop of evergreen huckleberry plants! We also have potted strawberries fresh in from Midori and Red Dog, as well as some bare root bundles of strawberries too. If you don’t see a variety you wanted, check back, as the Nursery Staff will be getting a few replenishing orders of berry plants in the next few weeks. There is nothing more gratifying than picking berries off of plants you tended on your own in the middle of summertime.
If you are working up a new berry zone, it is wise to acquire some Acid Mix fertilizer to amend your soil and some Alder Sawdust for an appropriately acidic mulch. Fortunately we are well-stocked on those items in the Nursery as well.
BERRY BOOZE
How could anything be better than fresh berries? Why, turning those fresh berries into fermented goodness of course! Chief among these berry boozes is the Dream Patch Fruited Sour from Ommegang. Who could say no to a sour draped in notes of cherry, raspberry, and blueberry? If cider is more your bag, the Calypso from Alpenfire is a solid offering. A mixed ferment of Apples and Blackberries, this cider is barrel-aged to bring out its complexities. This cider is also a showstopper in the glass, with a crystalline ruby hue. For a unique cider from the other side of the water, try the Elderberry Cider from Lost Giants in Bellingham. Or if you prefer your berry booze for dessert, try a Black Currant or Blueberry Brandywine from our beloved neighbor, Finnriver. All told, there is a lot of stuff to get excited about in the booze corner of the Corner.
PUCKER POWER
Though we do stock some blueberries and strawberries on the Produce Porch at the moment, we wanted to highlight the fruit we are calling the “berry of the citrus world,” the kumquat! These bad boys are a potent dose of citrusy tartness. The Meiwas are the sweetest, while others prefer the size of the Mandarinquat or Centennial. Nagamis have a good balance of tart/sweet and a smooth skin. Kumquats can be eaten whole, rind and all. Though we would be very impressed if someone made fresh kumquat juice, talk about an exercise in concentration! Kumquats are a limited seasonal citrus, and citrus season is winding down, so come grab a handful to snack on while they are still around!
BLUEBERRY YUM YUM
There is one scone to rule them all, and that is the Lemon Blueberry Scone from the Corner Kitchen. Enrobed in a simple, elegant icing (blueberry juice and lemon juice create the hue), this scone is a true local treasure. Show up with a bag of these and you will be revered pretty much anywhere. Did we mention it pairs amazing with a fruity, light-roasted cup of coffee made from beans from Catkin Coffee or Olympia Coffee Roasters? Come on in and secure a heavenly triangle for yourself. And keep an eye out for potential seasonal rotations of future flavors!
‘BUCHAS GRACIAS
Get your probiotic bubble fix on with Health-Ade kombuchas through the rest of the deal cycle (March 25th). The Pomegranate Blueberry flavor is on point! Take a dollar off of all the pint-sized bottles. These bubbly probiotic teas are berry delish. Fun fact: Health-Ade started out as a market vendor at the Brentwood Farmer’s Market in LA back in 2012. Makes you wonder what happened to the original kombucha “mother,” or if she’s still off producing kombucha somewhere.
