PACK YER GALLEY

Greetings Scalliwags!

We welcome all the inbound mariners venturing to Port Townsend for the Wooden Boat Festival this weekend.  Billed as the largest celebration of wooden vessels in North America, it is a cornerstone of the annual calendar that makes Port Townsend what it is. A chance for transference of maritime skills, knowledge, culture, and fun, in the name of reverence for the ocean. As merchants of fine foods, we humbly invite you to pack yer galley at the Corner this weekend. One hand for you, sailors! Read on for all the scuttlebutt!

STOW HIGH IN TRANSIT

Fruits for the Forecastle

No ship’s cook should leave harbor without some earthly delights. We are outfitting our rigs with the first pears and apples of the season. Green Bartlett Pears, and Gala, Zestar, Sansa, and Sweetie Apples are all coming live and farm-direct from Tonnemaker Hill Farms. Hang some grapes from the halyards as well, as we have Reliance grapes from Tonnemaker’s, as well as the perennial favorite Green and Red Seedless Grapes from OGC’s Ladybug Brand. Jupiter Grapes have been making some moonlight appearances as well.

The 5lb mini cases of Green Bartlett Pears from Tonnemaker Hill have been a big hit at $6. 25/lb with boxes of Green Bartletts for $26. We will also have 20 lb cases of apples available of rotating cultivars from Tonnemaker’s all autumn long. This week we have Sweeties, Galas, and Zestars in 20lb cases for $25, and the elegant Sansa apple runs for $30.

GROG OF THE GODS

Alpenfire’s Pirate’s Plank

No vessel’s berthing will be ready for sail without several bottles (perhaps kegs even?) of Alpenfire’s notoriously dry cider, Pirate’s Plank. This cider is the purest dry cider on the Peninsula. Alpenfire was first planted in 2003 and had their first barrels in 2006. They were part of the first wave of craft ciders in the US and have stayed “core” their entire operational life as fully ORGANIC. We are fortunate to have one of their long-standing Production Technicians, Colin Fissenden, on our staff, in the produce and maintenance departments. Go walk Alpenfire’s plank, it is a most enjoyable stroll.

BRING ABOARD BOXES

Fine Local Cedar Storage

Also, as it is Wooden Boat Festival weekend, we would be remiss to not remind folks that we have our very own cedar wooden vessels at the Corner, made for us by James Harding of Paloma Fine Woodworking. They make great containers to load with local goodies for any occasion! These simple boxes don’t begin to showcase James’s insane woodworking skills, however. So, be sure to check out and follow his art on his Instagram @paloma_fine_woodworking

GO WILD WITH WOODS!

Plant a Native Landscape

Every sailor needs a prime port in a storm. As the rains return but before it gets all socked in and grey, now is a great time to expand the perennials around your land. We have some great new additions to the nursery stock to help you in your quest for northwesterly paradise. Scuttlebutt aboard the S.S. Corner Nursery is that she's got a considerable deck load of Alaskan Yellow Cedar  - plant wood for generations of future boat builders! As one of the world's most durable woods, Alaska Yellow Cedar is the tree of choice for indigenous strip bark canoes from our friends at Northwest School for Wooden Boat Building. Trees are $9.99 from Salish Trees Nursery just on the other side of the Hood Canal bridge. Other desirables in stock now include Huckleberries, Goat’s Beard, Wild Ginger, Yellow-Eyed Grass, and Pacific Wax Myrtle.

SALT OF THE EARTH

Tin Fish Finds on Deals

We have a new fleet of deals for September, and no mariner should go without some tinfish in their pantry. All month long the Wild Planet brand sardines and mackerel are a killer deal. Mackerel is $2.49 per can, sardines are 2/$4. Of course tinfish pairs nicely with some potato chips when you are out manning the tiller. We have great deals on the Boulder Canyon potato chip line as well. Stay salty, Chimacum!

GET ON THE FARM!

22nd Annual Jefferson County Farm Tour is September 14-15

Also, another reminder that the following weekend is Jefferson County Farm Tour! Several farm vendors that sell to us here on the Corner are participating in the tour this year as in years past. Put on by WSU Jefferson County Extension in partnership with The Production Alliance, it is a real neat way to see the current state of small-scale agriculture in our county. Be sure to map out your farm visits Saturday and Sunday - and don’t forget! Chimacum Corner Farmstand is FARM TOUR CENTRAL!

Hope you float on through your weekend with ease!
