APPLETOPIA
HOW U LIKE THEM APPLES
We are thick in the bounty of apples. Malus Domestica, patron saint of Washington agriculture. How best to celebrate the variety of experience an apple can be? Trying them alongside our premier grower, Tonnemaker Hill Farm of course! We will have Luke Tonnemaker out in the greenhouse on the afternoon of November 13th from 1pm to 3pm to culture more stoke around his Wonka-like array of fruits. Calling all true produce nerds and pomologists! Read on for other deals in the house, perhaps while listening to “Sweet Thing” by Van Morrison.
KEEP THE DOC AWAY
As stated, this week is all about apples at the Corner. Whether you love an old standard like Jonagold, Braeburn, or Fuji, or the cutting edge, like Ludacrisp, Mountain Rose, or Cosmic Crisp, or even a local heirloom, like Ashmead’s Kernel, Belle de Boskoop, or Karmijn De Sonnaville, we’ve got a little something for everybody. The modern apple display has genetics from all over the globe, but it is neat to discover that it all started in Kazakhstan. There are still some of the only remaining stretches of wild apple forest there. Perhaps Sacha Baron Cohen should make a little documentary on apples. That would be a hoot.
CASE DEALS
We have an intergalactic favorite landing from Tonnemaker Hill Farm this week: Cosmic Crisp! Cosmics are deeper red than Honeycrisp, and bred for storage. Once a coveted and scarce apple that fetched $5 per pound, we are jazzed to offer the first of Tonnemaker’s legitimate harvests of Cosmic Crisps at the corner and are bringing them in by the binload. Did you know that the Cosmic Crisp is actually a product of the apple breeding program at WSU? Come on in for full availability on cases of apples, pears, and winter squash as well!
FRESH OFF THE PRESSES
We have a mouth puckering Honeycrisp Apple Cider from Columbia Gorge if you prefer a liquid diet when it comes to apples. Made from 100% certified organic single varietal apple juice! We have been carrying Columbia Gorge juices for many years now, and they are a solid Northwest company. Not bad for a family that started out in the dry cleaning business back in the 70s.
PIE PERFECTION
Hanni is in full force at the pie station, and the Take-And-Bake Pie offerings will be rolling all holiday season. Save yourself some time on the big days and enjoy scratch-made totally organic pies that utilize the best Washington produce, including Winter Luxury pie pumpkins from Midori Farm right here in Jeffco.
For those that have their own “innards” to use, we also offer Pie Shells that are scratch-made and then frozen to facilitate your pie-making predilections.
And for those on the go, try our rotating selection of mini pies! They are so cute! The latest addition will be the mini-pumpkin pie, using local squash!
SWEET CHEEKS
The deals have really been sweetened this month. The entire Wholesome line of organic fair trade sugars are on sale, as are the maple syrup and maple sugar from Coombs Family Farms. And nothing “puts the flame on it” like some shredded coconut or toasted coconut flakes from Let’s Do Organic. We even have stevia and monkfruit powders from Sweetleaf on the deals sheet this month! Lots to get excited about and a perfect time to load up for winter confection making!
For the bullet point version, check out our November Deals sheet for all of the big highlights.
SAY HELLO TO DEL
Now that the Nursery has settled back down after Pumpkin Mania, we’re excited to announce our new Nursery Manager, Del Schoenthaler. Del has “come up through the hawsepipe” at the Corner Nursery, starting as a Nursery Assistant. His calm force is evident, and he greets all comers with a felt compassion and understanding. Del has had many past lives and wonderful stories that lend a grit to the greenhouse. Del’s favorite apple du jour? Mountain Rose.
As we have said goodbye to our 2024 crop of Nursery Assistants, we are slightly pared down on our hours out front. Del is on site Tuesday through Friday, and otherwise feel free to inquire inside with clerks if you need assistance.
Rare opportunity for a BUYER LEVEL II or III to join the Corner Grocery Team! Our buyers curate our tasty selection of grocery items, and each has responsibility over assigned departments. The buyers work as a close-knit team, support each other in managing their sets, and are passionate about local and organic food and products.
The person we seek has excellent decision-making abilities, quickly interprets reports and data, maintains accurate inventory management and effective merchandising, and has a deep appreciation for local food systems. Wholesale buying experience is preferred. Daily responsibilities include receiving and stocking their sets, reviewing sales and inventory data, placing orders online and via phone, working with vendors and teammates, and assisting the clerks as needed. Depending on experience and qualifications, the position will be filled as a Grocery Buyer Level II (wage range $20.00-$24.38) or Grocery Buyer Level III (wage range $23.00-$28.04). Options are for part time (up to 28 hours/week) or full time (32+ hours) employment. Schedule will be dependent on order deadlines for the assigned sets, and will include one weekend day. Benefits for part time employees include vision and dental insurance, paid time off, employee discounts, profit-sharing and EAP. Full time employees are also eligible for medical insurance.
