New Bulk Soil Amendments for Organic Gardeners
February 19th, 2014 by Katy McCoy

Every successful organic gardener or farmer knows that one of the most important requirements for growing healthy plants is starting with healthy soil: soil that is pH-balanced, packed full of nutrients, and teaming with microscopic organisms. If you feed your soil’s microorganisms, it’s said that they will pitch in and do 90% of the remaining work to keep the soil (and therefore the plants) healthy.

How to make those microorganisms happy? One of the ways is through adding organic soil amendments. Other ways include adding compost or rotted animal manure, or by growing and turning under cover crops.

The Corner now has a new bulk organic soil amendment bar selling 15 of the best soil amendments for our area, including a “Chimacum Blend” that is formulated and proven to work especially well with our soils. Local farmer, Scott Richmond, is mixing this “exclusive” blend, which he personally has used for years. It is based on a recipe by Steve Solomon, author of “Growing Vegetables West of the Cascades”.

The science of it can be intimidating to those getting started, but fortunately there’s more than one way to slice this tomato and we’re here to help. At the bar, you will find lots of reference material including a fabulous soil amendment article written for us by Jeanmarie Morelli, a professional horticulturist and copywriter from Port Townsend (edibleliteracy.com). If Rob’s around (as he usually is Tue – Sat before 3:30), you can also challenge him with questions!

In the article by Jeanmarie, she discusses why soil amendments are important, how to get your soil tested so you can figure out what nutrients you need, how to choose which amendment(s) to buy, and finally when to apply them. She also talks a bit about the soils we have here in East Jefferson County.

Here’s a list of the amendments we’re selling in bulk. In all cases we have searched out soil amendments that are of the highest quality and are safe for the organic garden. Almost all of them will have at least one of the following certifications: OMRI (The Organic Material Review Institute, ROIM (Registered Organic Input Materials), or WSDA certified organic. Click here for a chart of the amendments and accompanying info.
