Folks, it’s that time of year – time to get those greenhouse benches or windowsills cleared off and seeds planted.  In this post we’re going to talk about the reasons why you’d be crazy to not buy local organic seed from Oatsplanter Farm and/or Seed Dreams, our local seed producers each of which are offering their full lines at Chimacum Corner Farmstand.  We’ll also fill you in on the Rockwell Bean seeds from Willowood Farm on Whidbey (which you’d also be crazy to not buy).

Enough about seeds and starts. All that counts for nothing if we don’t have the proper dirt. New this year the Corner is selling 25 lb bags of Roger Short’s Magical Soil for $9.99 – the perfect soil to jumpstart your plant starts. In this article we intend to get to the bottom of the magic in this Center Valley substrate and instruct you how to best use it. To get our answers, we’ve cornered the “dirtologist” himself, Roger Short, on his 400 acre Short’s Family Farm where he raises his famed 100% grass-fed beef that we so enjoy.

Ever wonder about the true state of agriculture in Jefferson County?  Answers are now available as results have been compiled from an in-depth survey completed by Citizens for Local Food, a new ad-hoc all-volunteer group that formed to help strengthen community support for local food, an issue near and dear to the Corner’s heart. Members of CLF came from Local 20/20, Chimacum Grange and elsewhere. Their well-articulated mission:

“To be in service to the people of Jefferson County to create a local, secure, and just food system that strenthems our community, ecology and economy”.

The snowballs do fly this time of year: feasts to prepare, gifts to buy…  Let the Corner help you dodge each and every one whether you need a hostess gift, Turkish Delight, a grass-fed rib roast, last minute staples, or just a place to rest your weary bones and enjoy a cup of hot soup!

We are now taking December orders to help you prepare for your holiday feast (just as we did for Thanksgiving). Pre-ordering helps us anticipate your needs and lets you rest easy that we won’t run out.

Not only is it the day before Thanksgiving – one of the busiest grocery shopping days of the year, but today we launch our new online store.  Who came up with that timing???

We’re calling it the “Chimacum Corner WEBSTORE” (as opposed to our brick and mortar “Chimacum Corner FARMSTAND”).  Please check it out and browse through our initial offerings of gift baskets and Chimacum Corner apparel and accessories.

It’s true that dry rose wines go well with almost any dish and with so many flavors on the table during the holidays – rosé is a truly great choice. Recently Cracker and I took a little trip in search of some stellar small producers of Washington rosés’ for you. We had to look no further than Washington’s Walla Walla valley.

What follows is our abbreviated trip report – viva rosé!

Yes Cracker, soups at the Corner are back and this season there’s a new cook in the kitchen: Beth Johnson of In-Season Catering. We’re in for a treat, no doubt about it.

Beth has always loved food and has made a livelihood of it in Port Townsend the last 25 years. Many of us know her as the original inspiration behind the Cape Cleare Salmon Cart sandwiches. Others know her through her extensive catering at weddings, bat mitzvahs, and a myriad of events supporting local non-profits and other organizations. Some of us are partial to her line of jellies and chutneys which we’ll have well stocked at the Corner in time for the holidays.

Harvest Greetings Neighbors!

Thanksgiving this year lands on Chimacum Corner Farmstand’s second anniversary, marking 2 years of serving you! We are most thankful and indebted to our incredible community, our farmers, and the glorious earth itself in this country’s far corner. In celebration of our anniversary, we’ll be doing what we do best – selling high quality foods from as close to home as possible – roots, brassicas, squash, mashers, turkeys, and the list goes on. Grab a pencil and plan your feast!

One food cart leaves and another rejoins us:

Starting today, Rosa returns with her beloved Taco Truck and will be serving tacos, burritos, and changing chef specials on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, 11am to 3pm – ¡Que Bien!

Zoog’s BBQ leaves the Corner at the end of Sept to open a restaurant and music venue in Hadlock. Sad for us, but great for the community and we wish Zoog and Michele the very best of luck!
