The free Master Gardener workshop series continues into September at the Chimacum Corner Garden.  Join Erica Iseminger on Sunday, September 11 from 10 am- noon in this hands-on class dividing the perennial herbs at the Corner Garden.  Dorian Curry’s workshop on soil building has been changed to Wed, Sept 21, from 6 – 7 pm.

On Saturday, October 8th, the Chimacum Corner Garden will be hosting a scavenger hunt focused on local food, farming and the history of the greater Tri-Area communities. Starting at the Corner Garden, hunters will head out to local farms, restaurants, businesses and community organizations throughout the greater Tri-Area

Calling all local businesses and organizations to participate in the upcoming Greater Tri-Area Scavenger Hunt!  On Saturday, October 8, 2011, the Chimacum Corner Garden will be hosting a fun, family-friendly scavenger hunt that will bring our community together around local food, farming and the history of our Greater Tri-Area community (Chimacum, Pt Hadlock, Irondale, Quilcene, Marrowstone and everything in-between!).  Starting at the Corner Garden, friends and neighbors will visit participating businesses and organizations in their hunt to find as many items on the list as possible.

What is the vision of the Chimacum Corner Community Garden? Our vision is to create a vibrant, outdoor community gathering space and classroom where people can connect to each other, the land, and their food. And, this vision is becoming real!

What a great way to check in with the community, catch up with friends, listen to music, and stock your kitchen all at the same time. While you’re at it, treat yourself to a tamale, a bagel sandwich, a chocolate eclair, or heck, why not all of the above?  The market is located on the grounds of our store at the only 4-way stop in town!  9122 Rhody Drive.

Independence and dependence. These are terms we all understand. When a child is born, she is dependent. Upon her parents, family and everyone around her…. for everything. Food, shelter, clothing – all of it. But as the child matures, independence becomes the order of the day. Like a salmon swimming upstream, the child resists limitations, chafes at the rules and generally swims against the current. Wanting to do everything on ones own, like walking, riding a bike, dressing, reading, running, driving a car. It’s all about independence.

This drive for independence continues well into adulthood, but slowly another dynamic takes over.

It was a close game, but the CHS Alumni squeaked out a win over the CHS soccer team Sunday, June 12th.  Both teams played impressively well — the final score was 5 to 4.  This was the first year for such a match-up, but Kevin Coate, the CHS soccer coach, hopes now to make this an annual event.  When Kevin asked the Corner if we would consider sponsoring the alumni team, we thought “why not?”.  After all… “Keepin’ it Local”… “Rootin’ for the Hometeam” — That’s ultimately what we’re about.  GO COWBOYS!  GO CHIMACUM!

I got to hear Wendell Berry speak in Seattle a week ago. He is always inspiring and thought-provoking around agriculture and culture issues.  When asked if there was one thing he could do to make the world a better place, he replied, “Eliminate volume discounts!” He then went on to explain how the WalMarts and Costcos are decimating our local economies and communities. Volume discounts force suppliers (and farmers, too) to “get big or get out”, in the name of cheap food. But the corporatization of agriculture and the commoditization of food has costs we are not paying when we shop at Costco. When we buy cheap food, we are running up a big bill out in the future that is coming due…Soil erosion, dependence on fossil fuels, global warming, destruction of our local economies and rural cultures, to name a few.
